Filament winding is a fabrication technique for manufacturing various products. The process involves winding filaments under tension over a mandrel. The mandrel rotates while fibres impregnated with resin lay on the mandrel in the design pattern. The most common filaments are glass fibre or carbon coated with synthetic resin, other inorganic fillers might be also used during the process to reduce the cost or enhance the product characteristic. Once the mandrel is completely covered to the desired thickness and the resin is cured the product is removed and sent to further machining and testing. The controlled variables for winding are fibre type, resin content, wind angle, tow or bandwidth and thickness of the fibre bundle.
